Established nine decades ago, the Yew Chung Early Childhood Education programme is one of Hong Kong's top preschool programmes. A pioneer in adopting play-based learning since the 1970's, Yew Chung's Early Childhood Education has initiated different pedagogical practices and approaches. Supported by worldwide education research, the programmes our highly experienced teaching staff bring today are progressive, up-to-date and well-balanced for children. YCIS believes every child is unique and should seek their personal journey to grow in the key areas of child development: emotional, personal and social; communication and literacy; numeracy, problem solving and reasoning; understanding of the world; physical development and creative development.

Learning / Teaching approach and activities
|
At YCIS, children are guided by teachers to learn through play, as they explore, discover and process knowledge. Language, literacy, art and music elements are integrated into the curriculum, to support character formation and nurture independence.
YCIS creates stimulating, child-centred and play-based learning environments in a bilingual setting, and children are nurtured by our Western and Chinese Co-Teachers. Our violin programme starting at the age of four supports an early embracement of music. Co-Teachers build a portfolio per child to record their individual development path and ensure holistic learning for every individual.
|
Assessment of children’s learning experiences
|
Individual observation and assessment through a developmental continuum ensuring the holistic development of each child.

School Characteristics

School vision and mission
|
At YCIS, our bilingual, inquiry-based, and holistic education helps our students build a solid foundation of knowledge and a diverse range of skills from an early age. In our ECE programme, it’s imperative that our students view themselves as competent learners and know that they are valued. We welcome families’ interest in their children’s learning journey, and we encourage their active involvement on campus and in our school community.
YCIS nurtures students in a multicultural and immersive bilingual environment which supports well-rounded development and character formation.
|
Support to students
|
Our Student Support Services team works closely with teachers, families, and community professionals to identify individual needs and provide comprehensive support.

Support to non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students

Co-teaching effectively facilitates bilingual learning when both Chinese and English languages are equally valued. Western and Chinese Co-Teachers provide an environment where children interact naturally, feel comfortable about their own identity and communication and begin to move easily between cultures and languages. To support our strong home-school partnership, we run workshops and community events for parents, grandparents and caregivers as part of our programme.
Apart from the online individual learning documentation throughout the year and an end-of-year report, parent-teacher consultations will be held regularly to maintain close communication with parents.
